R Crumb Makes A Start on the Bible
I doubt cartoonist R Crumb would formerly have called himself a Christian Artist. But he has recently spent so much time in the Book of Genesis that he must by now qualify at least ex officio for the title.
Tackling even one book of the Bible must have been an enormous task to contemplate, though I read somewhere that he approached it as “Just another illustration job.” What guts! Whether he came out at the end feeling the same way about it isn’t revealed …
The net is full of reviews of his recently-released cartoon version of The Book of Genesis. Here are four of the best:
- RVA NEWS. It’s quite a long review, and it’s thoughtful and honest. Check it out – it’s worth a read!
- NEWSWEEK. Another thoughtful and very interesting review.
- NY TIMES. “God Gets Graphic” in the Sunday Book Review.
- LA TIMES. Yet another brilliant review, subtitled “Before he re-created and inked in the firmament, the artist did much research for his illustrated version.”
Enjoy!

Great articles and I would have to say that no one who spends that much time digesting the “beginnings” as Genesis means, could come away the same. A rabbi told me me the entire history of mankind is in the first 3 chapters of Genesis!
